What Are Greek Yogurt Bagels?

Are bagels and donuts the same? No not at all they are different regarding dough and toppings. Even processing may differ as bagels undergo thorough boiling while donuts don’t require that.

Greek Yogurt bagels can be made up within minutes with flour, Greek yogurt, and baking powder only if you aren’t using self-raising flour.

It gives a plethora of topping choices and can be made sweet and savory as per your preferences.

Ingredients Used In Greek Yogurt Bagels

Just four ingredients go into these Greek yogurt bagels and make them such fantastic goodies. Let’s get a breakdown of all the required ingredients here:

All Purpose Flour

This is the star ingredient of our Greek yogurt bagels. Just add plain flour but that may require yeast to get puffed up.

Pro-tip: You can use self-raising flour that will rise on its own without additional yeast and baking powder.

Egg

It is used as an egg wash, just brush it on the top of bagels when you are ready to bake.

Baking Powder

It acts as a leavening agent as you are using plain flour then using this will puff up your Greek yogurt bagels.

Greek Yogurt

Use thick fat free 0% Greek yogurt as it will make a fine dough. Using plain yogurt will get sticky and you will have to use excess flour to make the right dough.

Tip: Sieve the plain yogurt by resting it for 10 minute in a cheesecloth so that the water drains out of it.

Besides that you may require toppings which you can personalize as per your liking so ingredients for the toppings vary accordingly.

How To Make Greek Yogurt Bagels?

Making Greek yogurt bagels is simpler than you may realize as there are few simple steps and your delicious bagels are ready.

In the first step, preheat your oven to 190⁰C. Line the parchment paper on the baking sheet so that the Greek yogurt bagels won’t stick to the surface.

Prepare the Dough

Take a large bowl and add flour, salt, and baking powder. Add the Greek Yogurt and mix thoroughly.

The flour will start to crumble, but the lumps aren’t something to be worried about as now you have to plunge your hands deeper into the bowl and make a rough dough ball. It doesn’t need to be perfect as we still have to knead our dough.

Kneading

Now dust some flour onto a clean surface and start kneading (you must be aware of how to knead as use the heel of your hand and then push it away make a quarter turn and then fold it again)

Keep kneading and make quaternary turns, keep doing it till you have done it almost 15 times. It shouldn’t be sticky but it could be tacky a bit.

Dividing & Folding

Now comes the dividing process, divide your dough into 6 equal parts and spread each loaf into a rope that is around 3/4 inches thick. You can weigh it down but I did it supposedly

Join the ropes together and make a round bagel-like shape. Make sure, your Centre of the bagel isn’t too wide.

Boiling

Boil the bagels before baking as it gives them a typical and authentic bagel touch. I usually do it by boiling a pot of water and then gently lower them down.

The bagels may initially sink to the bottom so lightly nudge them with a spatula and when float to the top which they will within seconds, now flip the surface and boil again for half a minute.

Note: If you are boiling bagels beforehand, then directly sprinkle the toppings on the top after they come out of water.

After boiling, place the bagels onto lined parchment paper.

Topping Up Bagels

If you have skipped boiling, then brush your bagels with egg wash, milk, and water, and then sprinkle with the seasoning you have prepared.

You can spread the topping onto a plate and then place the top end of the bagel downward and the toppings will stick to the surface.

Baking

Now comes the final step, place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes at 190⁰C. Keep the fan on and make sure the heat is evened out.

Post-baking, give 15 minutes of resting time to let them cool down. Your Greek yogurt bagels are ready to be devoured.

Topping Ideas For Greek Yogurt Bagels

You can customize the topping the way you want. But here are some of my favorite toppings which you can choose:

  • You can add typical bagel seasoning that’s a mix of flavored seeds and nuts. It can be store-bought and made at home within no time.
  • You can top up your Greek yogurt bagels with Dukkah which is a mix of fragrant seeds and nuts. It includes pistachios,  almonds, cumin, coriander, and sesame seeds along with flaky salt.
  • Do you want to go for a simple and quick topping? Add grated cheese on the top along with herbs including thyme or basil.
  • How about Za’atar? This is another fantastic topping for Greek yogurt bagels.  It can be made up of sumac, sesame seeds, oregano, thyme/marjoram, and flaky salt.
  • Greek yogurt bagels don’t necessarily need to be spicy, right? So add a touch of sweetness by adding cinnamon powder and sugar that will elevate the flavor profile.

How To Store Greek Yogurt Bagels?

  • Greek Yogurt Bagels can be frozen that’s what we are sure of. But what if you want to freeze the dough? I suggest you avoid freezing the dough, you can refrigerate it for a day but thawing will ruin your dough.
  • Freezing your bagels is a good idea, I usually slice them into halves and place them in a zip lock bag.
  • After freezing, keep them in the toaster for a while and your Greek yogurt bagels are thawed in a notice and ready to be baked.
  • If you don’t wanna cut then keep the whole bagels in the freezer however its thawing may take hours which isn’t so appealing to busybodies like us.
  • If bagels are kept sealed, they will go fine for three days, but still baking on the same day is highly recommended.

Serving Suggestions For Greek Yogurt Bagels

The serving ideas are endless as your ingenuity knows no bounds. Classically we used to slather a whole lot of cream cheese but now we have many other options.
